80% of central funds for Urban Swachh Bharat Mission unused by states, UTs: Govt

With less than a year remaining for the completion of the Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban (SBM-U) 2.0, nearly 80% of central funds allocated to states and Union territories remain unutilised, the Union government informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Minister of state for housing and urban affairs Tokhan Sahu said states have used only ₹6,639.80 crore out of the ₹32,609.99 crore sanctioned, responding to a question from BRS MP KR Suresh Reddy.

Puducherry and Delhi top the utilisation list at around 38%, followed by Telangana, Chandigarh and Manipur. In contrast, high-performing states in cleanliness rankings Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat  have utilised only 21% and 13%, respectively.

Some UTs, including Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, have reported zero progress.

The Centre attributed the sluggish utilisation to delays in planning, frequent revisions of action plans and inadequate technical capacity at the city level.
