Alexander Duncan criticizes Hanuman Statue in Sugar Land, sparks controversy

Texas Republican leader Alexander Duncan has faced backlash for criticizing a 90-foot statue of Lord Hanuman, known as the Statue of Union, in Sugar Land, Texas. Duncan claimed the US is a Christian nation and criticized the construction of the statue at Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple.

On X, he wrote, “Why are we allowing a false statue of a false Hindu God to be here in Texas? We are a CHRISTIAN nation,” and cited Bible verses from Romans and Exodus to justify his stance.

The remarks drew criticism online. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF), called the statements “anti-Hindu and inflammatory.” HAF filed a formal complaint with the Texas Republican Party, urging action against Duncan. Social media users also reminded him that the US Constitution protects freedom of religion.

Unveiled on August 18, 2024, The Statue of Union, stands 90 feet tall, making it North America’s tallest Hanuman statue. Conceived by Sri Chinnajeeyar Swamiji, it symbolizes devotion, strength, and service, aiming to promote hope, peace, and spiritual unity.
