Another earthquake hits Afghanistan, just two days after deadly earthquake that killed 1400 people

Afghanistan was struck by another earthquake on Tuesday, just two days after a powerful tremor devastated parts of the country and left more than 1,400 people dead. According to Reuters, citing the GFZ, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit southeastern Afghanistan with its epicenter located 34 kilometres northeast of Jalalabad city in Nangarhar province, as per the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The fresh quake follows Sunday night’s 6.0-magnitude earthquake that flattened entire villages across multiple provinces. Thousands were left trapped beneath debris and remains of wooden homes, which crumbled under the impact. The scale of destruction has placed enormous strain on the country’s confined resources.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed on Tuesday that at least 1,411 people had died and more than 3,100 were injured in Kunar province alone during the earlier earthquake. With rescue operations still underway, authorities fear the death toll could rise further as aid workers reach remote areas.

The back-to-back earthquakes have deepened Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis, with the Taliban administration already struggling under economic collapse, reduced international aid, and widespread displacement. Relief agencies have warned of urgent needs for shelter, food, and medical support as survivors brace for aftershocks and worsening conditions.
