Bangladesh ‘blood-soaked’: Ex-PM Hasina slams Yunus govt

Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday criticised the Yunus-led interim government, warning that the country was passing through one of the most dangerous phases in its history.

Delivering an address from New Delhi, Hasina said Bangladesh stood “at the edge of an abyss”, alleging that violence, political persecution and insecurity had gripped the nation over the past year.

She accused the interim administration of ignoring the people and allowing extremist and communal forces to destabilise the country.

Describing the situation as one where “the entire country has become a vast prison,” Hasina claimed democracy had been dismantled and dissent silenced.

In her address, the Awami League chief outlined five recommendations to help “unify Bangladesh”. These included removing what she termed the “illegal” Yunus administration, restoring democratic governance, halting street violence, ensuring the safety of minorities, women and vulnerable groups, ending politically motivated legal action, and inviting the United Nations to conduct an impartial investigation into last year’s events.

Her remarks come ahead of Bangladesh’s national elections, scheduled to take place in February.
