The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Monday suspended advocate Rakesh Kishore after he attempted to throw his shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court.
The incident occurred during the mention of cases before a bench led by CJI Gavai. Reports said the lawyer approached the dais, removed his shoe, and tried to target the Chief Justice.
Security personnel immediately intervened, preventing the attack and escorting Kishore out of the courtroom.
As he was taken away, Kishore reportedly shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge (We will not tolerate any insult to Sanatan).”
CJI Gavai addressed the court following the incident, stating that such actions do not distract him. “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” he told the lawyers present.
The attack comes days after CJI Gavai’s controversial remarks while rejecting a plea to reconstruct a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Khajuraho temple complex, which drew widespread attention on social media.
The Bar Council has condemned the lawyer’s conduct, emphasizing that such behaviour is unacceptable and violates professional ethics.
