On the occasion of Constitution Day, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that the party would fail to reclaim power at the centre.
Mamata said BJP would not return to power in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, and the Central government “may even collapse before that.”
Speaking to reporters after garlanding the statue of B.R. Ambedkar on Constitution Day, Banerjee urged opposition parties to unite against what she described as “one-sided governance” in the country.
Accusing the BJP of exploiting voters, she said, “They will offer you ₹10,000 before an election and loot you after coming to power. Jhoot aur loot – this is what is going on.”
She alleged that central agencies had sent nearly 400 notices to Trinamool Congress leaders but insisted the party would “continue to fight.”
The chief minister also criticised the Election Commission of India, highlighting the deaths of booth level officers (BLOs) in several states, including three in West Bengal.
She reiterated her earlier suggestion that summary revision work should be spread over three years rather than two months.
Banerjee further expressed concern over a reported Rajya Sabha advisory discouraging slogans such as “Jai Hind” and “Vande Mataram” in Parliament, questioning whether such restrictions “aimed to destroy the identity of Bengal.”
