Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Friday met senior officials of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata as part of a five-member delegation, demanding an end to alleged atrocities against minorities in the neighbouring country.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Adhikari claimed that the officials had avoided meeting him since Monday and agreed to the interaction only after he warned of staging a large protest outside the mission.
He said the delegation conveyed serious concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh, particularly incidents involving attacks on Hindus.
Adhikari referred to the recent unrest following the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, and the subsequent lynching of Hindu man Dipu Chandra Das, whose body was allegedly tied to a tree and set on fire.
He also cited reports of another Hindu man, Amrit Mondal, being killed in mob violence.
The BJP leader reiterated his criticism of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government and said protests had already been held in West Bengal earlier this week over the incidents.
