Chief Justice of India Surya Kant will preside over a special vacation bench of the Supreme Court on December 22 to hear urgent matters requiring immediate judicial intervention.
According to the cause list uploaded on the apex court’s website, the bench will also comprise Justice Joymalya Bagchi and is scheduled to assemble at 11 am.
The special bench will take up 17 cases, including a mix of criminal and civil matters. In a statement, the Supreme Court said the vacation bench has been constituted to ensure timely consideration of pressing cases during the ongoing court vacation.
The court added that such special sittings are aimed at addressing matters that cannot wait until the regular functioning of the court resumes.
On Friday, CJI Surya Kant had indicated his willingness to sit on December 22, the first day of the Supreme Court’s Christmas and New Year vacation, to hear urgent pleas.
