Congress reportedly declines to join joint committee on 130th Amendment Bill

The Congress party has reportedly conveyed to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju that it will not participate in the Parliament Joint Committee set up to review the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025,The Hindu reported.

The 130th Amendment Bill proposes to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and other Ministers from office if they are arrested and held in custody for 30 consecutive days for serious criminal offenses.

The Joint Committee was constituted to examine this and two other related bills concerning the removal of ministers facing serious criminal charges.

Congress sources indicated that the party has reservations about the bill and the legislative process, citing concerns over its implications for the democratic and parliamentary framework.

By refusing to join the committee, the opposition party has signaled its intent to voice its dissent from outside the review process.

The government has maintained that the amendment aims to enhance accountability of elected officials, while the opposition, including Congress, has argued that it could be misused for political purposes.
