Cyclone warning in Andaman and Nicobar: IMD predicts heavy rain and stormy weather

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands following a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, expected to intensify from September 24. Local port warnings have also been issued as heavy rainfall is likely until September 25.

The IMD has predicted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at one or two locations across the islands from September 24 to 28. Stormy weather with surface wind speeds of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is expected over the Andaman Sea and the islands’ coast.

Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid sailing into the sea till September 25 due to rough conditions. Tourists, boat operators, and island residents have been warned to exercise caution while navigating or undertaking recreational activities.

In line with the IMD advisory, the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) has rescheduled several vessel sailings.
