The Delhi High Court on Monday, directed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to take swift action to bring back Sahil Mahamad Husen, 23-year-old Indian man who ended up in the Russian Army.
Husen, who went to Russia on a student visa, ended up fighting the Russia-Ukraine war from Moscow’s side.
Justice Sachin Datta issued the order while hearing a petition filed by Husen’s mother, Hasinaben Samsudinbhai Majothi, from Gujarat’s Morbi district.
Majothi, a cancer patient and single parent, told the court she lost contact with her son in April 2024 after he called an uncle saying he had been arrested.
She alleged that Sahil was framed in a false case and forced into joining the Russian military, despite going to the country for studies.
The court directed the MEA to take “urgent and concrete” measures to secure his repatriation and appointed a liaison officer to communicate with the Ukrainian High Commission.
The next hearing is scheduled for December 3.
The case gained attention after a Ukrainian military video in October showed Husen claiming he had surrendered to Ukrainian troops.
Government lawyers told the court he had “voluntarily” joined the Russian army, but the family insists he was duped and forced into the conflict
