ECI announces second phase of Special Intensive Revision across 12 states

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Monday announced the launch of the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which will be conducted across 12 states to ensure updated and accurate electoral rolls ahead of upcoming polls.

Addressing a press conference, Kumar said the initiative aims to improve voter registration and verification, with around 1,000 electors per polling station.

Key functionaries of the SIR process

  • Booth Level Officers (BLOs):
One BLO is appointed for each polling station to oversee voter list verification and local updates.
  • Electoral Registration Officers (EROs):
Each Assembly Constituency has one ERO—an SDM-level officer responsible for preparing draft rolls, handling claims and objections, and publishing final rolls.
  • Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs):
Deployed at the tehsil level to support EROs in maintaining accurate voter records.
  • District Magistrates (DMs):
Empowered to hear first appeals against ERO decisions.
  • Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs):
State or Union Territory CEOs handle second appeals against DM rulings.

Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that the SIR exercise is vital for strengthening transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process nationwide.
