In response to Bangladesh’s request to New Delhi to hand over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, issued a measured response.
On Monday, Bangladesh’s former PM Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal for her role in last year’s student-led protests.
Bangladesh’s Muhammed Yunus-led government issued a notice urging India to hand over Sheikh Haisna after her tribunal verdict was announced on Monday.
In an official statement shared by MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, India said it had “noted the verdict” and reaffirmed its commitment to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh.”
Without directly addressing the extradition request, New Delhi stressed its focus on peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in Bangladesh, adding that it would “engage constructively with all stakeholders.”
The response comes a day after Dhaka invoked the bilateral extradition treaty and termed Hasina a “fugitive accused.”
India’s neutral stand signals caution as tensions rise following the high-profile judgment delivered under the Yunus-led interim government.
