Indonesia suspends TikTok’s registration over data compliance issues

Indonesia has suspended TikTok’s registration as an electronic service provider after the platform failed to hand over complete data related to its live-streaming feature, a senior government official said on Friday (October 3, 2025).

The suspension raises the possibility of blocking access to TikTok in the country, which has more than 100 million users, though the app remained accessible on Friday.

Alexander Sabar of the Communications and Digital Ministry said some accounts linked to online gambling had misused TikTok’s live stream during recent nationwide protests over police brutality and lawmakers’ allowances.

The ministry requested traffic, streaming, and monetisation data, but TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, withheld full details, citing internal procedures.

“So the ministry deemed TikTok to have violated its obligations as a private electronic provider,” Sabar said. TikTok said it respects local laws and is working with authorities to resolve the matter.
