Jhelum river crosses danger mark in J&K as heavy rains trigger flood fears

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday announced a flood alert after the Jhelum river breached the danger mark at various points, following two days of relentless rainfall that has already claimed two lives, stranded dozens, and disrupted connectivity across the Valley.

As confirmed by the officials, the water level at Sangam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district has gone past the critical 25-foot threshold. The Jhelum river was also flowing above the danger mark at Pampore, intensifying fears of inundation in several low-lying areas of the Valley. In Srinagar also, Jhelum river neared the 18-foot alert level, causing fear among the residents.

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department, which has been closely monitoring water gauges, warned that levels could rise further if the downpour continues. “All concerned authorities are requested to remain alert and take necessary measures. All officers assigned flood duties must immediately report to their posts,” the department said in an advisory posted on X.

The heavy spell of rain has already triggered flooding in several south Kashmir districts, including Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam, where disaster response teams and police have launched rescue operations. Emergency helplines have been activated across vulnerable zones to assist residents.

In Jammu, torrential rains since Tuesday evening created a flood-like situation, prompting the administration to issue similar advisories and urge the public to stay away from water bodies. Major highways were closed after landslides and waterlogging, further isolating affected areas.

With the Jhelum historically known for its devastating floods, most notably in 2014, the rising water levels have rekindled memories of past disasters. Authorities remain on high alert as the situation continues to evolve.
