Protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh escalated into violence on Wednesday, leading to the deaths of at least four individuals and injuries to over 50 others.
Demonstrators clashed with police, set fire to a BJP office, and vandalized vehicles, including a police van. Authorities imposed curfew and banned public gatherings in the region.
In New Delhi, sources suggested that the unrest was politically motivated, alleging that certain Congress leaders may have incited violence.
They claimed that statements encouraging stone-pelting and arson were made, raising questions about the preparedness of the youth.
The sources described the situation as a “conspiracy motivated by politics and personal gains,” and emphasized that the youth should not be blamed for the violence.
Prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike supporting the protests, ended his fast following the violence.
He condemned the unrest, stating that it undermined the peaceful nature of their cause and appealed for an end to the violence.
The central government has scheduled talks with Ladakh representatives for October 6 to address the demands. The situation remains tense, with authorities urging calm and dialogue.
