Thousands took to the streets on Monday in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), staging one of the region’s largest demonstrations in years.
Led by the Awami Action Committee (AAC), rallies were held in Rawalakot, Mirpur, Kotli, Neelum Valley, and other areas, with protesters demanding fulfillment of fundamental rights and long-pending reforms.
Internet and mobile services suspended
Authorities partially suspended internet, mobile, and landline services across the region to contain the unrest.
Despite these restrictions, visuals on social media showed massive crowds raising slogans and waving flags, signaling widespread public anger.
Demands of the Awami Action Committee
The AAC’s 38-point charter of demands includes subsidized flour, fairer power tariffs tied to the Mangla hydropower project, and the removal of elite privileges and refugee seats, issues that stalled earlier talks with Islamabad.
Tensions remain high
Local reports suggest at least two people were killed and several others injured, though the figures remain unverified.
Shaukat Nawaz Mir, a core AAC member, warned, “Enough is enough. Either deliver on rights or face the wrath of the people.”
