Moradabad man stabs five-month pregnant wife over dowry

In a shocking incident highlighting the ongoing dowry menace, a man allegedly stabbed his five-month pregnant wife after she refused to bring ₹2 lakh from her parental home.

The incident took place on October 6 at Abdulapur Leda village under Thakurdwara police station. The attack left the unborn child dead, while the mother, Mamta (25), is undergoing treatment in critical condition, police said.

Moradabad rural SP Kunwar Akash Singh stated that a case has been registered against the husband, Yashpal Singh, along with his father and brother-in-law. Raids are underway to arrest the accused, who remain at large.

According to Mamta’s father, the in-laws had been harassing her for dowry since her marriage in 2022, subjecting her to physical and mental torture.

On the day of the attack, when Mamta refused the demanded ₹2 lakh, Yashpal stabbed her in the abdomen.

Her family rushed her to a hospital in Kashipur and later to Moradabad when her condition worsened. None of the in-laws reportedly visited her during treatment.

Despite being legally abolished under the Dowry Prohibition Act, the practice of dowry remains prevalent in many rural and conservative households, often resulting in exploitation and violence against women when demands are unmet.

This tragic case underscores the continuing struggle to safeguard women against dowry-related abuse in India.
