Israel has announced plans to back former US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, with Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana declaring that Israel will rally global leaders to support the nomination.
“There is no one more deserving than you,” Ohana said, as Trump received a standing ovation in the Israeli parliament on Monday.
The US President, who was widely expected to win this year’s award but lost to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, is set to address lawmakers in Jerusalem.
Ceasefire breakthrough in Gaza
The announcement came amid major progress in the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, with Hamas handing over all 20 surviving Israeli hostages to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
In return, Israel is preparing to release over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners. Trump is also scheduled to meet families of the released hostages before heading to Egypt for the Gaza peace summit later today.
