Protests over social media ban turn violent in Kathmandu, 10 killed, Parliament gate vandalised

Nepal government’s decision to impose a ban on social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has triggered massive protests in the capital city of Kathmandu. On Monday afternoon, demonstrators clashed with police outside the Parliament building, where protestors vandalized the main gate.

According to reports from AFP, at least 10 people have died in the violence, as security forces attempted to disperse the crowds with tear gas and baton charges. Police said dozens were also injured during the clashes.

Earlier in the day, the Kathmandu District Administration Office announced a curfew across key parts of the city to contain the situation. High-security areas such as Parliament, the government secretariat, and the presidential palace were placed under curfew, with restrictions on movement and gatherings.

Despite these measures, thousands of protestors took to the streets, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the social media ban, which many argue is a direct attack on freedom of expression.
