SC asks ECI to publish list of voters deleted in Kerala SIR

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to publicly display the list of voters removed from Kerala’s draft electoral roll following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and to consider extending the deadline for filing objections.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the deadline for submitting claims and objections should preferably be extended by two weeks in view of the difficulties faced by voters.

The court was hearing petitions alleging that nearly 24 lakh voters were deleted from the draft roll without the list being made public, causing confusion as the current deadline ends on January 22.

While leaving the final decision on the extension to the ECI, the bench asked the poll panel to take ground realities into account. The court also directed that the list of deleted voters be displayed at gram panchayat offices and other public places, in addition to being uploaded on the ECI website.
