SC to hear Umar Khalid bail plea in 2020 Delhi’s riot case

Umar Khalid, after five years, will approach the Supreme Court for bail in custody, for the Delhi riots conspiracy case. The hearing is set for September 19, 2025, before Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria.

Khalid, along with Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider, and Gulfisha Fatima seeks to overturn the Delhi High Court’s September 2 order that denied bail. The court cited the nature of their alleged roles in the riots “grave”

The case, under the UAPA, alleges rioting, conspiracy, and terrorist activities. Authorities claim the 2020 anti-CAA/NRC protests were a “well planned conspiracy” resulting in over 50 deaths.

Prosecutors rely on WhatsApp messages, speeches, and secret meetings. Despite a five year delay without trial, the High Court said delay alone does not justify bail in UAPA non-bailable offences.

As the Supreme Court hearing begins, attention is on whether justice delayed will become justice for the accused, or if the gravity of UAPA charges will prevail.
