The Madras High Court on Friday ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Karur stampede, which claimed at least 41 lives and left nearly 100 injured during a political rally on 27 September.
The SIT will function under the leadership of Inspector General (North) Asra Garg. The court has directed the Karur police to immediately hand over all related documents, evidence, and investigation reports to the newly constituted SIT.
The tragic incident occurred at a rally organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in Karur district, Tamil Nadu.
The High Court stressed the need for an impartial and time-bound investigation to ensure accountability and prevent such tragedies in the future.
Families of victims have been demanding justice as questions continue to rise over lapses in crowd management and security arrangements.
