Scindia slams Congress as ‘charitrahin’ over remarks on PM Modi’s late mother

Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, calling it “charitrahin” (characterless) in response to the alleged derogatory remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother during Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar.

Speaking in Indore, Scindia said the opposition had crossed all limits of political decency. Without directly naming the Congress, he remarked, “The party has become charitrahin,” underscoring what he described as a decline in values and discourse within the organisation.

Scindia’s criticism carries added weight as he was once a prominent leader in the Congress before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2020 following differences with the party’s central leadership. His defection, along with several loyalists, played a key role in toppling the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh that year.

The controversy has further deepened political hostilities, with BJP leaders rallying around PM Modi after repeated references to his late mother at opposition rallies. For Scindia, the remarks offered an opportunity to highlight what he sees as the erosion of respect and dignity in the Congress’s political culture, contrasting it with the BJP’s emphasis on “values and development.”
