Heavy overnight rains brought Kolkata to a halt on Tuesday, flooding several neighbourhoods and halting traffic. Water entered houses and residential complexes as roads went underwater.
The downpour was most severe in the city’s eastern and southern parts. According to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Garia Kamdahari recorded 332 mm of rainfall in just a few hours, while Jodhpur Park saw 285 mm. Kalighat, Ballygunge, and Topsia also reported over 260 mm each.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal triggered the rains and warned of more heavy rains in South Bengal districts, including Medinipur, Jhargram, South 24 Parganas, and Bankura. Another low-pressure system is likely to form around September 25.
The rains also disrupted Metro Railway services. Waterlogging between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations led to the suspension of operations on part of the Blue Line. Services are currently operating in a limited capacity between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations.
