Stalin slams Modi over GST reforms, accuses Centre of denying states their share

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin on Monday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the rollout of Goods and Services Tax(GST) reforms, accusing the Centre of denying states their rightful funds.

Responding to Modi’s claim that Indians would save ₹2.5 lakh crore through the new GST and income tax relief, Stalin said the Prime Minister failed to acknowledge that “50% of this relief has actually been borne by state governments.”

He added, “It is our duty to point this out, but the Union has failed to acknowledge or appreciate it.”

Stalin also accused the Centre of using financial allocations as a tool of pressure, citing the denial of Samagra Shiksha funds to Tamil Nadu for resisting “Hindi imposition.” “When will this injustice end?” he asked on X.

The GST reforms, rolled out on September 22, the first day of Navratri, were described by Modi as a “GST bachat utsav.”

The new system replaces the earlier four-tier structure of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% with a simplified two-tier structure, aimed at boosting consumer savings.

Stalin, however, argued that such measures were long overdue, saying, “If these steps had been taken eight years ago, families would already have saved many lakh crores more.”
