Man detained outside Jodhpur jail for supporting Sonam Wangchuk

Jodhpur Police on Saturday detained a man outside Jodhpur Central Jail after he shouted slogans in support of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is lodged in the prison under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) in connection with the recent Leh violence.

The detained man, identified as Vijay Pal from Churu district, appeared near the jail carrying a tricolour and shouting “Bharat Mata ki jai.”

Expressing solidarity with Wangchuk, he told police that he had travelled by bicycle to Sujangarh railway station and then by train to Jodhpur to show his support.

“Vijay Pal has been detained. He is claiming to be an ordinary man. The police are questioning him,” said Dinesh Lakhawat, in-charge of Ratanada Police Station.

Officials added that nothing suspicious was found with him so far.

Wangchuk was brought to Jodhpur Central Jail on Friday after being detained from his residence in Leh under the NSA.

The Ladakh administration alleged that his speeches referencing the Nepal agitation and the Arab Spring had contributed to the violent incidents in Leh earlier this week.

He was flown to Jodhpur airport Friday night and taken to the jail in an armoured vehicle amid high security.
