US President Donald Trump acknowledged that the steep tariffs imposed on Chinese goods were “not sustainable,” as tensions between Washington and Beijing mount ahead of his anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In an interview with Fox Business, a clip of which aired Friday, Trump conceded that while the tariffs “could stand,” they were implemented only because “they forced me to do that.”
The United States had previously raised import taxes on Chinese goods to as high as 145% during the tariff standoff, sparking global concerns over economic stability.
The two nations have since observed a series of 90-day truces, temporarily halting further escalation.
The latest truce is due to expire on November 10, with uncertainty looming over whether the world’s two largest economies will extend the pause or reignite the trade war.
