Filmmaker Priyadarshan has paid a heartfelt tribute to veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 84.
Remembered for his impeccable comic timing and versatility, Asrani was laid to rest in Mumbai the same evening.
Speaking to News18, Priyadarshan recalled his long association with the late actor, having worked together in several classics such as Hera Pheri, Hulchul, Garam Masala, and Bhagam Bhag.
“I did maximum films with Asrani sir. I realised I did more films with him than Hrishikesh Mukherjee did,” the director said.
Priyadarshan described Asrani as “a great actor who never exhibited buffoonery but always made people laugh.”
He also revealed that they had recently collaborated on his upcoming film Haiwaan, where Asrani completed his final scene just days before his passing.
“I’m blessed that I shot his last take about five-six days back,” he said, expressing shock over the sudden loss.
Remembering his warmth off-screen, Priyadarshan added, “He was more humorous off-camera than on-camera. We all used to sit around him to hear his old industry stories. He was the best.”
