In a recent development in the Mumbai hostage case, a magisterial inquiry has been launched into the death of social entrepreneur Rohit Arya, the man who held 17 children and two adults hostage.
The inquiry regarding the Powai recording studio case will run alongside a separate investigation by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch.
According to the officials, the magistrate will call witnesses, record statements and submit a report as Arya succumbed to death during a police encounter, which requires independent inspection under law and SC directions.
The incident took place on October 30 at R A Studio in Powai, where Arya allegedly threatened to harm the hostages, including minors.
Police said they tried to negotiate with him for over two hours but decided to break in when he refused to surrender and continued threatening the children.
According to police, Arya fired first with an air gun, after which officers retaliated. He later died in hospital from his injuries.
Senior officials stressed that the priority was safely rescuing the children and that the operation followed standard procedures for hostage situations.
