Civil aviation ministry issues statement as volcanic ash cloud nears India

Amid the volcanic ash crowd approaching India, the Civil Aviation ministry said there is “no cause for concern”.

On Monday night, a thick plume of volcanic ash from the Hayli Gubbi eruption drifted into Indian airspace, prompting precautionary measures across multiple flight corridors.

In a statement, the ministry said it is maintaining seamless coordination with air traffic control, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), domestic and international airlines, and global aviation agencies to ensure smooth operations.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued the required NOTAM, and all airlines have been kept updated about the ash cloud’s movement.

Officials said operations across the country remain largely unaffected, with only a limited number of flights rerouted or made to descend temporarily as a safety precaution. “There is no cause for concern at this moment,” the ministry reiterated.

The ash plume, which entered Delhi’s skies around 11 pm on Monday before drifting over Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Punjab and Haryana, is expected to move towards China next.

According to the IMD, the cloud is likely to exit Indian airspace by 14:00 GMT (7:30 pm IST) on Tuesday. The ministry said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue issuing timely updates to ensure passenger safety.
