Senior BJP leader and nine-term MLA Prem Kumar was unanimously elected speaker of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday through a voice vote.
Chief minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav escorted him to the chair, maintaining legislative tradition.
Prem Kumar, 70, who has represented Gayaji since 1990, has previously served as minister and Leader of Opposition, making him one of Bihar’s most experienced legislators.
Pro-tem speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav said four proposals were received for the post, all backing Prem Kumar. With no Opposition nominee and the BJP commanding majority support, this marks the first unanimous speaker election since 2015.
His appointment further strengthens the BJP’s influence within the ruling coalition, coming after the party also secured the key home department portfolio.
After taking charge, Prem Kumar said he would give equal importance to both treasury and Opposition benches and work towards fostering meaningful debate in the House.
