A 24-year-old Indian student, Sahaja Reddy Udumala, has died after sustaining severe burn injuries in a house fire in Albany, New York.
The Consulate General of India in New York said it was “deeply saddened” by her “untimely demise” and is in touch with her family to provide all possible assistance.
The fire broke out on December 4, with responding officers finding the residence fully engulfed. Four adults were rescued and taken to hospital with serious injuries, two of whom were later moved to a specialised burn centre.
Udumala, who was pursuing her Master’s degree in Albany, succumbed to her injuries shortly after, police said.
A fundraiser by her cousin revealed she had suffered nearly 90% burns and later died due to complete organ failure. The family described her as a bright student with “a future full of dreams and promise.”
