England pacer takes break from red-ball cricket, to focus on white-ball cricket ahead of Ashes 2025-26

England fast-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton has announced he will take an indefinite break from red-ball cricket, marking a significant shift in his career trajectory. The 31-year-old, who last featured in a Test against India during the five-match series during the English summer, said the decision came after “a great deal of thought” about the demands of the modern game.

In an official statement released by the ECB, Overton highlighted how red-ball cricket has played a fundamental role in his career. However, he stressed on modern-day challenges of the game including tight schedules throughout the year and how it gets difficult to commit fully to all the three formats. According to the statement released, for now Overton will focus majorly on white-ball cricket.

Overton made his Test debut in 2022 and has since played just two matches in the longest format, despite turning out in more than 90 first-class fixtures over his career. His decision to step away indefinitely from red-ball cricket comes at a pivotal moment, with England gearing up for the Ashes tour of Australia later this year.
