“Black law”: Sonia on VB-GRAM G law, slams MGNREGA repeal

On Saturday, senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Centre after the Lok Sabha passed the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025.

During the Lok Sabha session on Thursday, the VB-GRAM G bill was passed and simultaneously the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

In a video message, Gandhi said lakhs of Congress workers were ready to fight what she described as a “black law”.

She accused the Modi government of attacking the interests of crores of farmers, labourers and landless people by weakening MGNREGA, and alleged that the legislation was pushed through without consultation.

Gandhi also claimed the government not only removed Mahatma Gandhi’s name but fundamentally altered the structure of the rural employment programme.

Enacted in 2005, MGNREGA guaranteed 100 days of wage employment to rural households.

The new VB-GRAM G law replaces it with a rural development framework aligned with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, offering a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment.
