Indian Men’s Football team suffers 3-0 defeat to Iran in CAFA Nations Cup group stage

India’s hopes of advancing in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 took a heavy blow on Monday as they went down 3-0 to Iran in a group stage clash. Despite a disciplined defensive display in the first half, the Indian men’s football team was undone after the break, conceding three unanswered goals.

Iranian forward Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh broke the deadlock early in the second half, setting the tone for the contest. India, under the guidance of new head coach Khalid Jamil in only his second international outing, struggled to cope with Iran’s superior pace and precision. Jamil’s substitutions in the latter stages failed to spark a turnaround, and Iran capitalised with two more strikes to seal a commanding win.

Ranked 113 places above India in the FIFA standings, Iran’s dominance was clear, though India showed resilience in stretches of the match. However, the gulf in class eventually proved decisive.

With the loss, India’s path to the tournament final has become more challenging, as only the group winner advances. Jamil and his squad now face the task of regrouping quickly to keep their campaign alive.
