Afghanistan earthquake leaves over 1,400 dead as Taliban government plead for help

Afghanistan is reeling from a devastating earthquake that has killed more than 1,400 people and injured over 3,000 across the country’s eastern provinces. The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Kunar province on Sunday, flattening entire villages and leaving thousands homeless. Officials fear the death toll could increase as rescue teams struggle to reach remote mountain communities still cut off more than 24 hours after the disaster.

The earthquake caused the most destruction in Kunar province, where at least 610 people were confirmed dead, while neighboring Nangarhar reported 12 fatalities. Survivors now face dire conditions, with hospitals overwhelmed, homes reduced to rubble, and limited access to food, water, and shelter.

The tragedy comes at a time when Afghanistan is already crippled by economic collapse and shrinking international aid following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Strict policies, including restrictions on female education and employment, have deepened the country’s isolation and weakened its capacity to respond to such disasters.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has appealed for urgent international assistance, considering the administration’s limited resources. With thousands displaced and winter approaching, Afghanistan faces a mounting humanitarian crisis in the wake of the earthquake.
