The Yamuna in Delhi crossed the evacuation mark on Tuesday, triggering concerns of flooding in the national capital. Continuous discharge of water from the Hathnikund and Wazirabad barrages pushed the river above the danger level, forcing evacuations from several low-lying areas along the Yamuna floodplains.
Authorities also shut down the Old Railway Bridge after the Yamuna rose further, with water flowing above the warning mark. Thousands of residents living near the riverbanks were seen moving to safer locations, as relief camps and evacuation centers were activated by the city administration.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, said the Delhi government is “fully prepared” to tackle the situation, with disaster management teams deployed along the Yamuna. However, officials cautioned that the river’s level may rise further if rainfall continues upstream.
Meanwhile, Delhi NCR has been experiencing heavy showers for the past two days, worsening waterlogging and traffic congestion across several areas. With the Yamuna flowing above the evacuation mark and the monsoon still active, authorities remain on high alert to prevent large-scale flooding in the capital.
