The Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced the formation of a nine-member cabinet sub-committee to accelerate socio-economic and educational welfare measures for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), an official confirmed. The decision comes in the backdrop of massive protests by the Maratha community demanding reservation, led by activistManoj Jarange Patil.
For a long time, Marathas have been pressing for inclusion under the OBC category, arguing that despite their agrarian dominance, the community suffers from widespread unemployment, economic distress, and limited access to higher education opportunities. Last week Patil gathered at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai to protest for the demands of Marathas, thousands came in to support the cause.
Finally, on Tuesday, Patil announced victory as the government agreed with their demands but in limits. The newly appointed committee will guarantee a thorough research before just provisions are made for the Marathas.
