Senior Congress leader Gurdeep Singh Sappal on Tuesday alleged that his name and those of his family members were removed from the draft electoral roll published in Uttar Pradesh during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
A member of the Congress Working Committee, Sappal said their names had appeared in previous voter lists, including the 2003 roll and the last election.
In a post on X, Sappal claimed that despite submitting all required documents, including Aadhaar, passport, birth certificates and property papers. The deletions were justified on the grounds that his family had shifted residence from Sahibabad to Noida.
He alleged that officials told him there was no provision under SIR to retain the names of voters who had relocated.
Raising concerns over the wider impact, Sappal said while he might reapply through Form 6, “crores of genuine voters” could be affected. The Election Commission has not responded to the allegations.
The draft roll shows the deletion of about 2.89 crore voters in Uttar Pradesh following the revision.
