‘Negotiations are ongoing’: Japan confirms UNICORN radar talks with India

Japan on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to expanding strategic and infrastructure cooperation with India, with defence technology transfer and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project emerging as key focus areas during talks held today between the Japanese and Indian foreign ministers.

Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Toshihiro Kitamura said multiple strands of cooperation are currently underway, describing defence equipment and technology transfer as a flagship initiative.

He confirmed that negotiations are ongoing for the transfer of Japan’s UNICORN radar to the Indian Navy, with the system expected to be fitted on Indian naval vessels.

Kitamura also highlighted Japan’s engagement in India’s Northeast under New Delhi’s Act East policy, noting continued Japanese investment in the region.

On infrastructure, the spokesperson said both sides agreed to accelerate work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, with emphasis on transferring the latest Shinkansen technology. He added that E10 fuel is yet to be developed and is expected to be introduced only in the 2030s.
