Akhilesh, Mayawati welcome SC stay on UGC equity rules

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to stay the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Equity Regulations, which aim to prevent caste-based discrimination on university campuses.

Reacting to the order, Yadav said the apex court’s intervention was necessary to ensure justice and prevent social division. In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister stressed that both the language and intent of any law must be clear.

“True justice does not involve injustice to anyone. It’s not just about rules, but also about intention,” he wrote, adding that no one should face oppression or unfair treatment.

Mayawati also termed the court’s decision “appropriate”, stating that the new UGC rules had created an atmosphere of social tension across educational institutions.

The Supreme Court stayed the UGC Equity Regulations after observing that the rules were prima facie vague and open to misuse, warning that their implementation could have a dangerous impact and divide society.
