The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday, issued a letter to the West Bengal government, flagging non-compliance with its directions related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The Commission has sought compliance reports regarding electoral roll revision from Mamata Banerjee-led government by February 9. In its communication to the state’s chief secretary, the ECI cited failure to act on at least five directives.
These include not filing cases against two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and two Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) accused of adding fictitious voters and compromising data security, and not suspending an AERO who deployed 11 additional officers to conduct hearings.
The poll body also pointed to issues related to the cancellation of transfers of Electoral Roll Observers and the appointment of sub-divisional officers as EROs and Returning Officers.
The development comes amid an escalating standoff between the ECI and the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally argued her petition before the Supreme Court, which had sought a response from the ECI on notices issued during the SIR process. The matter will be heard next on February 9.
