In order to streamline use of Artificial Intelligence on social media platforms, the government on Tuesday has tightened regulations governing the use of AI on several platforms.
As per the new regulations, the government has mandated faster takedowns and stricter accountability for AI-generated content.
Under a new order issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), social media intermediaries will be required to remove content flagged by authorities within three hours, a sharp reduction from the earlier 36-hour deadline.
As part of amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the government has formally defined AI-generated and synthetically created content, including deepfakes.
Platforms will also be required to ensure mandatory labelling of AI-generated content, PTI reported.
The amendments state that AI-generated content will be treated on par with other forms of information when determining unlawful acts.
However, routine editing, accessibility enhancements, and good-faith educational or design-related modifications have been excluded from the definition.
The revised rules will come into force from February 20, 2026.
