“Absolute anarchy”: Stranded Indian tourist about Nepal protests

As political and social unrest continues in Nepal, several Indian tourists remain stranded in Kathmandu after violent protests erupted over the now-revoked social media ban.

Cross-border flights were suspended leaving several Indian tourists stranded. One of the stranded passengers, Gauri K, who was on a Kailash-Mansarovar expedition with her sister, described the horrible situation over the phone.

“Today we had a flight, but due to unrest in Kathmandu, all airline companies have cancelled their services. I am now held up in this hotel,” she told PTI.

Gauri recounted witnessing smoke rising from buildings set ablaze by protestors and hearing intermittent gunfire in the capital.

The Indian Embassy in Nepal came to rescue almost 190 Indian passengers and relocated them to a safer place.

With Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli and the President stepping down and the army taking control, uncertainty looms large.
