Cabinet to decide on resumption of matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium

The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday will decide the fate of hosting cricket matches at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Home Minister G Parameshwara confirmed.

This comes months after a stampede outside the venue left 11 dead and over 30 injured during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations.

Cricket activities have remained suspended at the stadium since the June stampede, which occurred as thousands gathered to catch a glimpse of the team who won their first IPL trophy in 2025.

To investigate the incident, the state government had constituted a committee headed by retired High Court judge Justice John Michael Cunha. The panel recommended a series of short- and long-term measures to strengthen crowd management and safety.

Parameshwara said the Cabinet would be briefed on discussions with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and RCB. He reiterated that matches can resume only after implementation of the committee’s recommendations, some of which have already been put in place.
