The Jana Nayagan case took a fresh turn after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, seeking that no order be passed without hearing from the censor board.
The move comes amid expectations that the film’s producer, KVN Productions, may approach the apex court challenging the Madras High Court Division Bench order that stayed the grant of a UA certificate.
What the CBFC did
According to reports, the CBFC informed the Supreme Court that it must be heard before any relief is granted in the Jana Nayagan case.
The board has maintained that the certification process was stalled after it received complaints alleging that certain scenes in the film could hurt religious sentiments, requiring further scrutiny by the authorities.
What had happened
Earlier, a single judge of the Madras High Court had directed the CBFC to grant a UA certificate. However, the censor board challenged the order, and a Division Bench later stayed the direction on January 27.
The producer had claimed that the examining committee had suggested a UA 16+ certificate with 14 cuts, which were duly made, but no clearance was issued, forcing the filmmakers to approach the court.
About the film
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is widely seen as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political entry through his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.
The film, also starring Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol and Pooja Hegde, is an adaptation of Bhagavanth Kesari and remains uncertified even after weeks of legal proceedings.
