Chinese media criticises Salman’s Battle of Galwan teaser, India responds

Chinese media outlets, including the state-run Global Times, have criticised the teaser of Salman Khan’s upcoming film Battle of Galwan, calling it a cinematic exaggeration that distorts facts.

The newspaper quoted a “Chinese expert” and several Weibo accounts, claiming the movie’s portrayal of the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops is propaganda.

Criticism also focused on minor details, such as actors’ costumes, hairstyles, and the depiction of extreme cold, suggesting these elements do not align with the actual events.

Indian government defends cinematic expression

Responding to the criticism, Indian government sources said, “Cinemas are an artistic expression and India does not restrict it.”

Officials highlighted India’s tradition of war-based films, including Haqeeqat (1964) on the India-China war and 120 Bahadur on the Battle of Rezang La, emphasising that films often dramatise historical events without altering facts.

Background of the Galwan Valley clash

The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020, culminating in violent clashes at Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020, where 20 Indian soldiers, including Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, lost their lives.

China later acknowledged the deaths of five of its soldiers, though reports suggest the toll was higher.

Teaser release and film details

Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the teaser was released on Salman Khan’s 60th birthday and has garnered over 60 million views.

The film, produced by Salman Khan and Salma Khan, stars Salman as Bikkumalla Santosh Babu and is set for release on April 17, 2026, highlighting India’s soldiers defending their territory.
