On the opening day of the Monsoon session in Odisha’s state Assembly, Congress party submitted a notice for a no-confidence motion against the 15-month-old BJP government in Odisha.
A delegation of Congress MLAs, led by Legislature Party leader Rama Chandra Kadam, handed over the petition to Assembly Secretary Satyabrata Rout, citing Rule 117(1) of the Assembly’s procedures.
The notice stated: “That this House expresses no confidence in the present Council of Ministers led by Shri Mohan Charan Majhi.” Kadam told reporters that 14 Congress MLAs, along with one CPI(M) member, had signed the petition.
Kadam added that Congress had earlier urged the principal Opposition, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), to bring such a motion but later took the initiative itself
In the 147-member Assembly, the BJP holds 78 seats, followed by BJD’s 50, Congress’s 14, one CPI(M) member, three Independents, and one vacant seat—leaving the motion’s fate uncertain.
