Delhi court dismisses plea against Sonia Gandhi over voter roll entry

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday dismissed a plea seeking action against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, which alleged that her name was added to the electoral rolls before she became an Indian citizen.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia rejected the petition, while noting that a detailed order will be released later.

The complaint, filed by Vikas Tripathi, argued that Gandhi’s name was included as a voter in the New Delhi constituency in January 1980, three years prior to her officially acquiring Indian citizenship.

Senior advocate Pavan Narang, representing the complainant, maintained that the move violated election laws.

The court’s dismissal brings an end, for now, to the long-standing claim questioning Gandhi’s eligibility as a voter in the early years of her political journey.
